Supported by Nature

The Supported by Nature project brings together six countries around the Baltic Sea in a joint mission to increase understanding of nature-based solutions. Learning sites for municipalities as well as educational and research institutions are being established in coastal, wetland, and river environments to showcase best practices.

Project Objectives

The overall objective of the project is to increase knowledge about Nature-based Solutions (NBS) and how they can contribute to improved environmental conditions in the Baltic Sea. In the long term, this knowledge is intended to lead to more frequent and effective use of NBS in spatial planning and in the management of terrestrial and marine landscapes.

Learning Sites for Nature‑based Solutions

Within the project, at least 17 NBS learning sites are being developed, focusing on multifunctional wetlands, coastal water habitats, and river course restoration. The learning sites function as demonstration and meeting places where knowledge is developed through hands-on experience.

Pilot Projects

The project is built around two key pilot initiatives:

  • Establishment of NBS learning sites through collaboration between multiple stakeholders – with a focus on learning by doing.
  • Increased understanding of NBS through practical, on-site activities – with a focus on learning by experiencing.

Partnerships and Collaboration

The project is implemented in cooperation between biosphere reserves and universities across the Baltic Sea region. These actors have extensive experience in developing sustainable solutions and engage a wide range of local and regional stakeholders. Together, they create demonstration environments and opportunities for knowledge development related to marine and freshwater issues.

Long-term Sustainability and Knowledge Dissemination

The biosphere reserves act as end users of the project results, thereby contributing to long-term sustainability. Work on learning sites for nature-based solutions is carried out in close collaboration with municipalities, university programmes with a landscape focus, students, non-governmental organisations, and interest groups. Experiences are shared both within and beyond the partnership, with the aim of showcasing good examples and best practices.

More Information

An overview of the project is available in a brochure, which serves as a quick introduction for anyone seeking a clear understanding of the project’s purpose and its significance for sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region.
